Burt McMurtry is Founding General Partner at Technology Venture Investments (TVI), a leading venture fund. TVI, a series of venture capital partnerships begun in 1980, has backed many successful companies, including Microsoft, Intuit, and Sun Microsystems. McMurtry founded and served as General Manager of GTE Sylvania's electro optics organization. In 1969 Dr. McMurtry left Sylvania to serve as President of Palo Alto Investment Company. From1973 to1980 he served as a Founding General Partner of Institutional Venture Associates.
McMurtry has been active as a volunteer for Stanford University, and is currently a member of Stanford's Board of Trustees as well as an Advisory Board member for the School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Business, the Hoover Institution, and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He is also on the Board of Trustees at Rice University and the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and has been President and a Director of both the National Venture Capital Association and the Western Association of Venture Capitalists. A graduate of Rice University, McMurtry earned his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford, working under Anthony Siegman, the first holder of the McMurtry chair.
